Post-operative rehabilitation

After undergoing an orthopaedic surgical operation for a musculoskeletal condition you will almost always need some form of ongoing treatment and physiotherapy to continue your rehabilitation to produce long term results. Your surgeon is able to repair tissues and structures but without ongoing graduated activity, muscle strengthening and muscle lengthening the benefit of the surgical procedure can often be compromised. Therefore your surgeon will recommend a physiotherapist for ongoing care.

The team at Malvern East Physiotherapy are experienced in dealing with patients following surgical procedures and are familiar with the post-operative protocols recommended by numerous specialists.  Our physiotherapists ensure that they liaise regularly with your surgeon and other health professional such as your General Practitioner.  They do this to ensure ideal treatment protocols are performed specific to your surgical procedure and to ensure most effective multi-disciplinary care to achieve the best outcome following your surgery.

Your physiotherapist is an expert trained in the management of musculoskeletal conditions and will design a comprehensive treatment program for you following your operation.  Some of the techniques commonly used by our therapists following surgery include manual therapy, soft tissue massage and dry needling to restore joint range of motion, lengthen soft tissue structures and relieve pain.

Your physiotherapist will then develop a graduated home exercise program for you to assist recovery easily at home. Exercises will be determined by and suited to your stage of recovery post-surgery and will gradually be progressed as you improve. In addition, you will be provided with simple pain relief strategies that you can perform at home.

At Malvern East Physiotherapy we believe in helping our clients to remain active and injury free in the long term rather than just the short time. Therefore it may be suitable for you to join one of our Pilates or strength classes for ongoing management following your surgery.

Common procedures that our physiotherapists provide ongoing management for are:

  • ACL repairs
  • Joint replacements such as Total knee and Total Hip  Replacements
  • Shoulder operations including rotator cuff repairs and stabilisation procedures
  • Carpal tunnel decompression
  • Achilles tendon repairs
